Posters of these presentations will be done as e-Posters and must be uploaded by 1:00 pm on Sunday, July 20 and will remain on display for the duration of the meeting. Oral presentations will include the speaker introduction, presentation, and time for questions in the usual 15-minute time slots. Authors of accepted abstracts are required to prepare both an oral and a poster presentation for this session. The authors of these abstracts will present their data at the Late-Breaking Abstract Session at the 2014 JAM from 2:00 to 4:00 pm on Monday, July 21. Up to eight abstracts will be accepted from those submitted for the competition. The 2014 Joint Annual Meeting Program Committee is calling for late-breaking abstracts of original research that highlight a broad spectrum of work, including cutting-edge, high-tech research that was completed very recently and is important to the species or discipline. Late-Breaking Abstracts will again be part of the Joint Annual Meeting this year, following the success of last yearвЂ™s session. The deadline to submit an abstract to the late-breaking abstract session is less than a week away! Submission Deadline: In short, this is an interesting and timely paper that should promote interesting discussion among many different groups. Finally the authors of the paper discuss the need for people involved in food production to gain the trust of the consumer recognizing trust comes from shared values. Further discussion suggests a вЂњsustainabilityвЂќ framework that could replace the precautionary principle. The paper presents a discussion of the Precautionary Principle and how its application could negatively impact the use of technologies that have the potential to enhance efficiency of animal protein production. The Senate bill would fund the Agricultural Research Service (ARS) at the level of $1.139 billion, which is $17 million above fiscal year 2014. This amount includes $325 million for the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative, $244 million for Hatch Act and $300 million for Smith-Lever funding. The bill provides $1.292 billion for National Institute of Food and Agriculture, or NIFA, which is $15 million above fiscal year 2014.

The full Senate Appropriations Committee approved the bill on May 22nd. In the Senate, the Agriculture Appropriations Subcommittee met on May 20th to consider its version of the FY 2015 spending legislation. The date for full committee markup has not been set, but it is expected to occur sometime in the next two weeks. Additional details on specific NIFA and ARS programs is expected to be available after the full House Appropriations Committee considers the bill. A copy of the bill approved by the subcommittee can be found here. The House bill provides $1.12 billion for the Agricultural Research Service (ARS), a $2 million decrease from last year. NIFA Extension Activities would receive $467,339,000, approximately $2 million less than FY 2014. This includes $325 million for the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI). For the National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA), the House bill includes $774 million for NIFA Research and Education Activities, which is $2 million above the FY 2014 funding level. The bill totals $20.9 billion in discretionary funding, which is equal to the fiscal year 2014 enacted level. On May 20th, the House Subcommittee on Appropriations for Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration and Related Agencies met to consider its appropriations bill for FY 2015.
